A beautiful desert yard doesn’t have to drink much water. With the right plants and smart irrigation, you can cut outdoor water use dramatically and still have shade, color, and curb appeal. Here’s how to build a water-wise landscape in Desert Hot Springs, Sky Valley, and the Coachella Valley.
Start with plants built for the desert
The single biggest factor is plant choice. Desert-adapted plants evolved to survive long dry spells and intense sun. Once established, many need only occasional deep watering.
- Shade trees: palo verde, mesquite, desert willow, ironwood, acacia
- Accent plants: agave, yucca, aloe, barrel cactus, ocotillo
- Flowering shrubs: desert sage, lantana, bougainvillea, brittlebush
- Groundcovers & grasses: low-water groundcovers and ornamental grasses to fill space and control dust
Group plants by water needs
Put thirstier plants together near the house or patio where you’ll enjoy them most, and place the toughest, driest plants farther out. This “hydrozoning” lets you water each zone only as much as it needs instead of overwatering everything.
Switch to drip irrigation
Drip delivers water directly to each plant’s roots with very little lost to evaporation or overspray. Pair it with a smart controller and adjust run times with the seasons: more in summer, much less in winter.
Water deep, not often
Frequent shallow watering keeps roots near the surface, where they bake in summer and can’t anchor against wind. Deep, infrequent watering trains roots to grow down, making plants tougher in both heat and wind. That matters in Desert Hot Springs.
Replace thirsty turf
Lawn is usually the biggest water user in a desert yard. Replacing some or all of it with desert plants, decomposed granite, and boulders can make a huge difference. Check with your local water district about current turf-replacement rebate programs before you start.
Mulch and shade
A layer of rock or organic mulch keeps soil cooler and slows evaporation. Shade trees cool the ground beneath them and the house beside them.
