Palms are the signature of the Coachella Valley, but they’re not all the same. Some love our dry heat, some sulk in alkaline soil, and some get far taller than people expect. Here’s how to pick the right palm for a Desert Hot Springs, Sky Valley, or Palm Springs yard, from the growers at the largest nursery in Desert Hot Springs.
California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera)
The only palm native to California, and it grows wild in the Coachella Valley’s oases. It has a thick trunk, big fan leaves, and a classic “petticoat” of dead fronds if left unpruned. It’s extremely heat-tolerant and moderately fast. Great for large yards, entries, and a true desert-oasis look.
Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta)
Taller and slimmer than the California fan palm and faster growing. These are the skyline palms you see lining streets across the valley. Plan for height: they can eventually tower over a single-story home, so plant them where the height is a feature, not a problem.
Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera)
The Coachella Valley is famous for its date gardens, and date palms make a dramatic, resort-style statement with feathery fronds and a stout trunk. They’re ideal for pool areas, courtyards, and commercial entries. Large specimens are often sold as boxed or field-dug trees.
Mediterranean Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis)
A clumping, shrub-sized palm that stays low, often under 10โ15 feet. It’s perfect for smaller yards, planters, and under windows where a big palm won’t fit. It’s very tough in heat and wind.
Bismarck Palm (Bismarckia nobilis)
Known for its striking silver-blue fan leaves, the Bismarck makes a bold architectural statement. It needs room to spread and does best with a bit of protection from hard frost on the coldest nights.
Palms to think twice about
Queen palms are popular in coastal California but often struggle in the low desert’s intense heat and alkaline soil, showing yellowing fronds. If you love the look, ask us about tougher alternatives.
When to plant palms
Unlike most trees, palms prefer to be planted when the soil is warm, from late spring through summer. Warm soil encourages fast root growth. That makes palms one of the few things that’s great to plant in the hot months here.
Wind tips for Desert Hot Springs
Desert Hot Springs gets strong wind. Newly planted palms should be properly braced until rooted, and fronds should not be over-pruned. A “hurricane cut” that strips a palm down to a few fronds weakens it.
