Pick the right screen for your space
How tall, how wide, how fast, and how much water? Here’s how our most-requested screening plants compare. For the full rundown, read our privacy trees & hedges guide.
Italian Cypress
The tall, narrow column along valley walls and driveways. Height without losing yard space.
Best for: tight side yards.
Ficus nitida
Thick, glossy, fast hedges that take shearing well. Thirstier than true desert plants, and roots can be aggressive near pools and walls.
Best for: dense, formal walls of green.
Hop Bush (Dodonaea)
A tough, fast, desert-adapted screen that handles heat, wind, and poor soil with far less water than ficus. Purple-leaf forms add color.
Best for: low-water privacy.
Texas Ranger
Silver foliage and purple blooms. Very low water and very heat tolerant. Best as a medium-height screen.
Best for: flowering, medium screens.
Bougainvillea
Trained on a wall or fence, it becomes a thorny, colorful barrier that loves heat.
Best for: color on walls and fences.
Afghan (Eldarica) Pine
Heat- and drought-tolerant, often planted in rows as a windbreak on big desert lots. It gets big, so give it room.
Best for: windbreaks on large properties.
Also: clumping Mediterranean fan palms for eye-level screens, and shoestring acacia for narrow spaces.
Tips for a screen that lasts
- Check mature width before planting along a wall or property line.
- Space plants correctly. Too tight and they compete; too far apart and it never fills in.
- Mix species on long runs so one disease can’t take out the whole screen.
- Water deep and infrequent so roots grow down.
- Plant in fall when you can.
Full hedge runs, one order
Lining a property line or a whole HOA wall? We’ll match varieties and container sizes across the run and deliver it all at once.
- 5- and 15-gallon for budget-friendly runs
- Boxed sizes for instant screening
- Contractor pricing on bulk orders
Privacy hedge FAQ
What’s the fastest privacy hedge for the desert?
Ficus nitida and hop bush both grow quickly. Hop bush uses far less water. For height in a narrow space, Italian cypress is the classic choice.
What’s a good low-water privacy hedge?
Hop bush and Texas ranger are both very heat tolerant and use much less water than ficus.
Should I plant oleander?
Oleander is tough, but every part is toxic, and oleander leaf scorch has killed many hedges across Southern California. Ask us about healthier alternatives first.
Do you deliver hedge plants?
